It is possible to dramatically reduce student debt and graduate with a ton of relevant experience
Tethys Engineering has existed for a few years now but it is in the recent past that the platform matured enough to help a meaningful number of students getting involved in virtual internship projects. These projects provided real experiences aligned with the student's academic program and created at the same time a meaningful source of income. The approach is simple, it only requires a forward thinking business partner and a group of motivated students, the rest is provided by Tethys Engineering. What this means is that we provide the online platform with the essential elements that will make this relationship work, that will allow a project to be manage effectively, and that will enable a full accounting and payment of the time spend delivering valuable work.
This represents an interesting vehicle to help students across the country, as well as their parents, change the economics of college education. Spending a few of hours every day and perhaps on Saturday morning could allow a student to earn $180-240/week (assuming the student ask for $12/hr), naturally more during summer months. As experience builds up, we have had instances where a grad student would accumulate $375-500/week. In fact, it is up to the student to decide what his/her own worth is. In the current tightening labor market, it is not for the lack of opportunities. What it takes is a little entrepreneurship from the part of the student and a willing business that recognizes that the talent still on campus is already extremely valuable.

Patrick was an essential part of the Truck Driver App project. Patrick was responsible for benchmarking apps in the marketplace, electronic logging device providers, conducting driver interviews, and translating his findings into both powerpoint presentations and other visualization tools. Patrick was quick to offer ideas for ways to improve our approach, illustrated by summarizing best practices learned in approaching in-person interviews. The initial intent of Tethys Engineering was to provide a place for engineering students to gain experience and access to the required software needed to execute engineering tasks commercially (i.e., using the software for commercial purpose). We continue to invest and have a comprehensive software portfolio from SOLIDWORKS available on our servers for the student's use, but we found that the platform is also very effective at helping a variety of student conducting online internships using more traditional tools and methods (e.g., spreadsheets, text editors, presentation software, etc). The project management tools, private group workspaces, social networking, time tracking and billing capabilities of the Tethys platform open opportunities for everyone.
Truck Driver Mobile Technology Benchmarking
The trucking industry is embracing new tech at a rapid pace. A group of students were involved studying the various truck driver technologies offered by large US fleet, scanned the market for startups and software/app providers, and evaluated the various functionalities and capabilities offered in the cab.
Surgery X-ray Imaging Tear Down and Benchmarking
Surgery X-ray imaging equipments are some of the most complex medical devices in the industry. A team of students supported a group of engineers (2:1) to completely tear down (only activity onsite), remodel in 3D and calculate the bottom cost of a competitive device that comprised over 1,000 components.
Aerospace Aluminum Stamping Research
The aerospace aluminum stamping sector is very fragmented and continues to evolve as the industry consolidates. A portfolio of 85 medium to large manufacturers was profiled, state incentive for new manufacturing in a variety of states were studied, real estate cost in over 100 counties analyzed and EPA regulations for various toxic processes documented to help an industry player make more informed decisions.
